"outfront" tonight, a scandal turns more bizarre. new details tonight on the petraeus scandal. the white house, forced to take a stand. not on david petraeus, but on another four-star general, john allen. america's top commander in afghanistan. he was set to become the nato supreme commander, until the president put that nomination on hold today. like

greevey will be our guest, georgia congresswoman tom price and florida congresswoman debbie wasserman schultz joins us. it's tuesday, november 13th, "starting point" begins right now. >>> morning, welcome, everybody. our "starting point" this morning. breaking news. another top military general has now been linked to the sex scandal that forced out cia director david petraeus. forced him to resign. general john allen, the commander of u.s. and nato forces in afghanistan is now under investigation for alleged inappropriate communications with jill kelley. now investigators are said to be looking into the 20,000 to 30,000 pages of e-mails and other documents that he sent to her. kelley, of course, is the florida woman whose original complaint to the fbi about threatening e-mails inadvertently exposed the affair between general petraeus and paula broadwell. meantime a team of fbi agents searched broadwell's home in charlotte, north carolina, overnight, and spent nearly five hours there wrapping up just after 1:00 in the morning. "wall street journal" is reporting that the fbi agent who launched the petra

hymn standing with a bunch of mannequins they use as a firing range, three of them and then him as the fourth without his shirt on like the manny kins it wasn't meant to be sexual it was meant to be funny. it wasn't interpreted as anything inappropriate according to this person. as for the agent, now that his name is out there, it makes sense about why he called initially a congressman from washington because frederick hump fridays 16-year veteran of the cia, worked in washington state there in 1999, had a big patrol play in investigating the millennium bomb plot against the l.a. airport and he knew the congressman from washington, that he called because that congressman used to be the sheriff there it would make sense he would call that congressman here raentsecently he thought the investigation was stalled. details are falling into place. >> tell me about the house intelligence hearing today. trying to get more information about the benghazi events and general patreaus is meeting with lawmakers in the house and senate tomorrow. >> we are unable to know what is being said becau

. >> a decision was made somewhere not to brief us which is atypical. it is very puzzling and i think was a mistake because this thing just came so fast and so hard, and since then, it's been like peeling an onion. every day another peel comes off and you see a whole new dimension to this. >> there's still a lot we don't know tonight. analysts say there's no evidence, no evidence that the affair led to any security breaches and that there are strict fbi protocols about who gets notified in this kind of investigation. but the timing of when the scandal broke right after election day and right before petraeus was scheduled to testify in the attack on the u.s. consulate in benghazi, libya, that certainly has a lot of people asking a lot of questions, understandably. the other angle to the story is an age-old tale of an affair between a married, powerful, highly respected man in washington and a younger woman. in this case, the woman who literally wrote the book on the general, paula broadwell. the two met when she was a graduate student at harvard. she later travelled to afghanistan, int

to do to get him elected, now please, pretty please will you listen to us. i thought he was supposed to be progressive, i thought that's what the republicans were saying. >> we are preserved to preserving the tax breaks for the middle class and piking sure the wealthy pay their fair share. >> the president just got reelected, the republicans are reeling, we told you a mommy reasons he's got leverage. one other a recent poll from pew research center: if you go over the fiscal cliff, they are going to blame the other side anyway, which you should, so you have all the leverage in the world! are you going to use it? some people are hopeful. i am not. i don't believe he will. now, one of the reasons i believe that is because i keep seeing quotes like this from the white for us officials: >> i love that. it's like oh, progressives, what an interesting little special interest group we have here. we should keep talking to them% and once we decide what to do, which will be the exact opposite of what they want at least we'll be able to explain it to them and pat them on the head. i'm a little

friends also tell us the general's wife, holly petraeus, is furious with her husband. you see her here at his confirmation hearings back in august of 2011, broadwell sitting just a few seats away. petraeus insists they weren't having an affair then, which leads us to the first big question -- when did the affair begin? petraeus' friends claim it started around november 2011, two months after he took over the cia. an important point, since he could be tried under military law for adultery. >> my understanding is that the affair did not begin when he was in the army. >> reporter: but many who know the general suspect it began in afghanistan. it was september 2010 that broadwell made her first of six visits to petraeus in the warzone after being granted extraordinary access to write the book about him. >> when i was in kabul, we would do a lot of interviews on runs. for him, i think it was a good distraction from the war. >> reporter: question two -- when did the fbi get involved? it was around may or june that the fbi was tracing those threatening e-mails sent to petraeus' friend jill ke

're with us today. and let's get started. first up, we just can't call it the petraeus scandal anymore. today, the u.s. general in charge of allied troops in afghanistan, the top commander john allen is himself the subject of a pentagon investigation of allegedly inappropriate communications with jill kelley. yes, that jill kelley, we're talking about the same tampa housewife whom david petraeus' then mistress paula broadwell apparently saw as rival. a whole new chapter in a saga that since last friday has been one bombshell after another. and so far, all of them have something to do with kelley. she's a volunteer military liaison at the air force base, home of the u.s. central command in tampa, florida. kelley complained to the fbi last spring when paula broadwell was having an affair with petraeus allegedly harassed her with jealous e-mails. petraeus admitted the affair with broadwell but denies any elicit contact with kelley. so does general allen who was scheduled for a senate confirmation hearing this very week to become nato's supreme allied commander. today that's on hold, but he will

has departed heading for the middle east. we begin with christiane. welcome. give us a sense of this new announcement from israel. how long do you think israel is waiting to silt on this halt before it would move forward with sending ground troops in? >> well, what was reported was that a senior government official in the loop close to the talks has confirmed to me this morning that after the latest intense round of conversations and meetings between prime minister netanyahu and his inner security cabinet, which went on into the early morning hours here jerusalem time, there has been a decision taken to hold on the ground offensive. to give time, he says, limited time to make the diplomatic solution work. that is their preferred option. however, he also adds that israeli military is prepared and continues to make its preparations in case, if and when, a decision is taken to escalate to a ground war. in that case the military would be prepared to react immediately. but clearly what we're hearing and what we've been reporting over the last 24 to 36 hours is that despite the fac

with retired four-star u.s. army general david petraeus. easily the most celebrated, best known general of the modern era. he resigned on friday, admitting to an affair. he was immediately linked to paula broadwell, like petraeus, she went to west point, an academic and a veteran who wrote a biography of petraeus. we know about the affair because of jill kelley, she alerted the fbi, said she was getting anonymous harassing e-mails, turns out they were from broadwell. kelley dealt with a lot of generals both in the military and socially in tampa. overnight we learned another four-star general is involved. our current commander in afghanistan, he took over when petraeus left, marine corps general john allen. now being investigated for what officials describe as potentially inappropriate e-mails with jill kelley of tampa. both of them deny any untoward relationship. and there's one more thing, the fbi is reviewing the conduct of the first agent who investigated jill kelley's e-mails in the first place, because he allegedly sent shirtless photos to jill kelley. in plain english, this is a m

to fill in some more details on shifting u.s. economic and security forces toward southeast asia and the pacific. but the visit is overshadowed by other international issues in the spotlight. amongst the asia pacific community, that would be the battle over the south china sea which involves china cambodia and the philippines. while that's one of asia's biggest security issues right now, it's paling in comparison to what's going on in the middle east. fighting between israel and hamas continued again yesterday. the palestinian death toll is now up near 100 and many of those people are civilians. president obama and bill clinton both took to the phones yesterday, speaking with benjamin netanyahu of israel and president mohammed morsi of egypt. the main word they're using is de-escalate telling the two nations to scale back the violence but so far neither side is willing to cease-fire unless the other will bend to their demands. egypt does have a peace tree with israel which is why that country could be the key in pu
